Eva M. Rathgeber joined the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in 1982 as a program officer in science and technology, and later became the founder and director of IDRC’s Gender and Development Program. From 1992-2001, she served as IDRC’s Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa, based in Nairobi, Kenya. In 2001, Dr. Rathgeber moved to York University, Toronto as a visiting professor of Development Studies and in 2002 she was appointed to the Joint Chair of Women’s Studies for Carleton University and the Université d’Ottawa. She continues to work closely with many international organizations including FAO, UNESCO, and the CGIAR system. She currently serves as the Chair of the CGIAR Water Challenge Program Panel on Gender, Institutions and Participation, and on the Steering Committees of the Gender Task Force of the International Telecommunications Union and the Gender Caucus of the World Summit on the Information Society. She has published material widely on science and technology policy, knowledge production, gender and development and gender and natural resource management. Her most recent publications include a quantitative analysis of the career experiences of male and female agricultural scientists working in the CGIAR system and the compilation of a global database on women in science. She recently prepared a chapter on women and new technologies for UNESCO’s Year book on Building Knowledge Societies, and is currently working on the use of information communications technologies in rural communities.
